What to Look for When Selecting a Citrus Juicer
A citrus juicer is a device specially designed to extract both the juice and the pulp from citrus fruit.
The best citrus juicers can turn a laborious process into one which is both simple and enjoyable.
While it’d be easy to say that automatic juicers are better, you can derive a lot of satisfaction from manual juicing. For that reason in this buyer’s guide we’ve included both manual and automatic citrus juicers.
So how do you ensure you end up with a great citrus juicer, and not one that’ll leave a sour taste in your mouth?
Well, there are a few things you should pay particular attention to:
1. Durability
The last thing you want from any household product is for it to break after a few uses.
Durability is important for a citrus juicer. Just as it is for anything else you might want to buy for your kitchen – if it can’t withstand sustained use, then it won’t serve you very well.
Stainless steel makes for sturdy commercial citrus juicers, but what about manual juicers?
You want to ensure the juicer is robust. Strong enough to extract the goodness from hundreds, if not thousands of citrus fruit. Avoid cheap plastic and materials which are likely to wear away with extended use.
2. Clean-up
It’s not glamorous, but cleaning up the juicer is an important part of the process. To this end, it’s worth looking at juicers that are easy to take apart and reassemble.
If you invest in one which takes too long to clean, you’ll likely tire of using it after a while, and use it with less frequency.
Another thing to look out for is if the individual parts are dishwasher-safe. If they are, (and you have a dishwasher) you’ll have a much easier time cleaning it.
3. Juice Yield
Now it’s time to get technical. If you want to maximise efficiency, and get every last drop of citrus juice from the fruit, then the juice yield has to be high.
The pain of throwing away a macerated orange knowing there’s a few drops of juice left in it should be enough motivation.
What could be worse?
Don’t allow yourself to feel that pain – trust me, it’s not worth it. Get your hands on an efficient juicer and you won’t have to deal with this problem.
4. Size
While size isn’t the most important factor, if you plan on making larger quantities, then it’s necessary.
If you want a citrus juicer to make juice for the family, or to have a supply which will keep you stocked up on vitamins for the day, then bigger is better.

Frequently Asked Questions About Citrus Juicers
Can I put oranges in my juicer?
Absolutely you can. There’s truly nothing better than fresh orange juice, especially when it’s made at home and not store-bought.
Citrus juicers are designed to work with all types of citrus fruit, oranges included. They are great for the job because they separate the pulp and discard the peel, making the orange to juice process ridiculously simple.
Is a citrus juicer worth it?
It depends! Do you drink orange or grapefruit juice on a regular basis? If the answer is yes, then it’s definitely worth it. If the answer is no, but you’d like to start drinking them regularly, then again it’s worth it.
If you’re not the biggest fan of those types of citrus juices though, maybe it isn’t for you. Having said that, if you haven’t tried homemade orange juice without all the added sugar, you might be pleasantly surprised!
Can you use a juicer for lemons?
Yes!
Lemon juice is great for many things. Not only can it be added to water to make it more exciting, but it also makes for a brilliant salad dressing or pancake topper.

Breville has a lot of good reviews but I agree, it’s not the easiest in terms of cleaning. I’d still go for manual juicers.
Yes juicers in general are not easy to clean so if you’re on the fence that’s not a bad choice!
