‘Detox tea’ is a buzzword that you’ve most likely encountered at some point. Even celebrities from Cardi B to Kylie Jenner are promoting it on their social media. They are also a paid promotion favorite of a lot of social media influencers.

In fact, the word detox has been highly popular over the recent years, with a lot of dieters talking about how it helps cleanse the body. Most of the hype around detox teas comes from its supposed benefits for weight loss.

What are detox teas and is the hype around them justified? Is there a detox tea recipe for weight loss?

What are Detox Teas?

Typically detox teas are teas with special ingredients that are meant to eliminate ‘toxins’ from the body. They are quite commonly used to ‘reset’ the body after a period of binging on unhealthy junk food that is full of sugar and refined fats.

Oftentimes, the term detoxing or detox teas are met with a bit of skepticism from the medical community. Many argue that our bodies don’t need to be ‘cleansed’ of any toxins, as our livers are perfectly capable of doing that.

There is also a lot of criticism of many commercial ‘detox teas’ that are marketed as fat burning or weight loss teas. Some of them do contain unhealthy levels of caffeine and laxatives that can lead to more health issues.

Making Your Own Detox Teas

However, if you don’t want to buy commercial products, you can make your own detox tea. This way, you can control what goes into the tea. How would detox tea made at home be beneficial for your health?

A lot of the detox tea recipes mentioned below contain very potent and healthy ingredients that are packed with powerful antioxidants. How do antioxidants help?

Benefits of Detox Teas

Well, to understand this, we have to understand what free radicals are. Free radicals are dangerous chemical species that are highly unstable.

They are produced as a result of many things we encounter in daily life, most notably:

  • UV radiation and heat
  • Environmental pollution
  • Refined foods with trans fats and heated oil
  • Foods that are high in sugar

These free radicals are essentially molecules that are missing electrons, which is what makes them unstable. They will attempt to steal electrons from your vital chemicals in your body, damaging DNA, proteins and tissues within the body.

Free radicals are the biggest culprit behind inflammation, an issue that causes arthritis, acne, and wreak havoc on your digestion—causing you to put on weight and store fat. They have been linked to some of the deadliest degenerative diseases such as hypertension, cancer and heart disease.

The silver lining? A healthy diet provides us with loads of antioxidants to mop up these free radicals and prevent them from causing damage. Antioxidants work by binding to the free radicals and giving them their electrons, so that they don’t try to get them from other places in your body.

Herbs, teas and spices have some of the largest concentrations of antioxidants. So, making your detox tea from them will greatly help you with inflammation, digestive problems and fat loss.

Here are some detox tea recipes for weight loss that you can try:

1. Detox Lemon Ginger Green Tea
